锋速天下5月14日 地震后的见闻(转载)刚刚接通了一位采访过我的四川记者朋友的电话,她刚刚从绵竹退下来,这个娇小的丫头在电话里和我讲了她眼见的情况,她只用了四个字形容,就是:“世界末日。”她说她几乎无法工作,眼泪就没有停过,太惨了,一片一片的废墟,到处是哭喊的声音,救援队发了疯一样的救人,然而往往救不了,跟着去的摄影只了拍一张照片,就扔下相机去帮忙,因为那情景让你不可能站着看着。 她和我说,她在一个学校现场看到了她永远不会忘记的一幕,学校的主教学楼坍塌了大半,当时正在上课,几乎有100多个孩子被压在了下面。全是小学生。一些似乎是消防队员的战士在废墟中已经抢出了十几个孩子和三十多具尸体,看着那些小小的,带着红领巾却再也无法睁开眼睛的孩子,她说她突然觉得自己说话的勇气都没有了。 然而就在抢救到最关键的时候,突然教学楼的废墟因为余震和机吊操作发生了移动,随时有可能发生再次坍塌,再进入废墟救援十分的危险,几乎等于送死,当时的消防指挥下了死命令,让钻入废墟的人马上撤出来,要等到坍塌稳定后再进入,然而此时,几个刚才废墟出来的战士大叫又发现了孩子。 几个战士听见了就不管了,转头又要往里钻,这时坍塌就发生了,一块巨大的混凝土块眼看就在往下陷,那几个往里转的战士马上给其他的战士死死拖住,两帮人在上面拉扯,最后废墟上的战士们被人拖到了安全地带,一个刚从废墟中带出了一个孩子的战士就跪了下来大哭,对拖着他的人说你们让我再去救一个,求求你们让我再去救一个!我还能再救一个! 看到这个情形所有人都哭了,然而所有人都无计可施,只眼睁睁的看着废墟第二次坍塌。后来,那几个小孩子还是给挖出来了,但是却只有一个还活着,看着那些个年轻的战士抱着那个幸存的小女孩在雨中大叫着跑向救援所在的帐篷的时候,她已经泣不成声。 我无法想象这在电话中已经如此惊心动魄的情形在当时是怎么样一个悲壮的场面,我只知道这是真实的,而且,在现在,在震中地区,这样的事情还在重复的发生着,就在今夜,我坐在舒适的房间内,第一次意识到我是否应该做些什么,虽然我不可能到现场去,但是我是否应该做一些力所能及的事情? 于是我眼含着眼泪,首先发了这一篇博文,我知道这篇博文无法带来什么实际的帮助,但是,这是我想到的最便捷的,我所能立即做到的第一件事情,一篇文虽然没有力量,但是至少我可以让更多的人关注这件事情。只有完成了第一件事情,才有第二件,第三件。 天佑中国,人间有爱。朋友们,无论你们身边有任何的条件,只要是能帮助灾区的,希望我们都马上付之行动,莫以善小而不为,一篇文章,一元捐款,都是一种支持,2008注定是荣耀与灾难交辉的一年,灾难的是中国人的土地,荣耀的是中国人的心。 5月2日 装逼指南(转载的)老田强烈推荐的文章,读了之后感触颇深,特此转一下。
听流行的不叫装逼,那应该听什么呢?听独立的啊,术语叫indie(你看看,不要说独立,中文土嘛!说 independent又嫌太长了,四个音节,舌头都会打卷,重音一不小心还会发错。所以直接读前面一半,indie,多慵懒的感觉啊,爱死这个词了)。独立的歌手一定要自己写词自己写曲自己编曲自己配乐自己组团自己录制自己拍MV自己发行,上哪都要把乐队带着,演出到一半要一一介绍,这是鼓手谁谁谁, guitar手叉叉叉,base手圈圈圈,keyboard啥啥啥。写的歌不能老是情啊爱的,不然充其量也就一创作型流行歌手了。要写生活,写小事,写理想,写小性子,写小脾气,写面朝大海,写春暖花开,实在是要写爱那一定只能写爱自己,恩,也就是自恋啦。这样才叫小布尔乔维亚情调噻。
说一说书籍的放置问题。严肃的古典文学一定要规规矩矩地放在书架或书桌上,切不可随手扔在沙发上,除非你想装成一个叛逆派牛人。而沙发上可以随便扔一些杂志,体现出你日常的品味。记得有一个记者采访芙蓉姐姐,芙蓉姐姐说她现在也在看书,那记者就问什么书?读者?知音?芙蓉姐姐说,才不是,是有深度的。所以,就算是杂志也要注意品味和深度,如果实在不知选什么杂志好,建议宁可选肤浅的美男美女靓车杂志,也别拿《知音》类的弱智刊物,前者最多被别人鄙视你的欣赏眼光,但后者会被别人鄙视智商的。所以建议大家还是忍一忍,放一本老庄的书,假装思考下宇宙万物轮回的大问题,或者放一本《资本论》,在每天的临睡前,借助马克思的智慧去思考下是不是该补仓了。还有一个地方,也是装B人士不能遗忘的舞台。曾经见过一个朋友家的厕所,马桶上放了本《十月》,看,装得多像!
你要是想“很鲁迅”或者“很五四”,那就把“去吧”写成“去罢”,“她”叫“伊”,“或者”用“抑或”,“如果”换作“倘若”,“比如”要说“譬如”, “因为”则是“因了”,还有,鲁迅那时候“那时候”叫“其时”,“松懈”用“弛懈”,“原谅”用“宥恕”,“点头”用“颔首”,既然颔了首,“馒头”自然也不能吃了,改吃“馒首”。这样说话可不是为了“讲究”,而是为了“考究”,都已经装到这个份儿上了,“已经”就改成“已然”罢,“常常”也不得不“每每”了。
行为艺术少不了道具,以下是我为大家开具的道具清单。首先你必须带一本杂志,啥?《读者》?呸,你丫只配去汉口火车站买杯豆浆蹲着喝去。中文的杂志一律PASS!必须得英文原版的!什么?《Reader’s digest》? 我说你丫有完没完啊?!按照小资圣经--保罗.福塞尔写的那本《格调》(Class)里面所说,连《国家地理》《TIME》之类的杂志都只会暴露出你庸俗的小中产阶级格调,可笑我们还老拿某某上了《TIME》封面说事儿,起码得拿本《Economist》吧,或者,后两个杂志的中文版是可以免费申请赠阅的,一般人我不告诉他!手机的话怎么也得带个Iphone,甭管多不好用,版本一律破解成阿拉伯语或者希伯莱语,倍儿有面子,电话响了先说:Bonjour!再说Guten tag!你要说HELLO你都不好意思和别人打招呼。笔记本也得带一个,LV的,接完电话就掏出万宝龙的钢笔在本子上写啊写的,眉头紧皱做日理万机状。笔记本电脑也得带上,女的一律用Imac或者Ibook,男的都用IBM,反正星巴客里面有无线的WIFI,把什么BT,电驴全都给开上,把网络带宽占的死死的,这样一来就你一人能上网,叫别人眼红去吧!去之前记得在电脑里把金山词霸给装上,不然英文杂志读不下来啊。咖啡杯决不能用店里的,不就一大瓷杯子么,上爱玛仕Hermes的,一千块一个,到了店里收银完了把杯子递过去,跟小姐特客气的说:麻烦您用这个杯子装咖啡,别的杯子我喝不惯。咖啡得喝现煮的,最好就和吃火锅一样,放在面前咕嘟咕嘟的冒泡,那才叫一品位。坐下来先把车钥匙往桌上一扔,不是BENZ就是BMW,最次也得AUDI,扔的时候得用劲扔,把所有人都吓一跳那种,然后大声的自言自语:这德国货质量就是好,这么用力都摔不坏啊(友情提示,买不起车你还买不起钥匙吗,上TAOBAO啊)。着装你可千万别穿西装领带,叫人笑话,要的就是休闲气质,先穿件长袖POLO衫,外面再套件长袖灯芯绒衬衫,然后再套件苏格兰格子的呢衬衫,啥叫格调,领子越多越有格调,脚上穿上拖鞋,一看就是永远待在空调房的贵族啊。再去银行换几十张一美元的零钞,走的时候丢桌上,穿过大厅的时候就听后面服务员喊:先生您的钱忘记拿了!要的就是这效果。你就缓缓回头,冲她回眸一笑,说:哎呀,我在美国喝咖啡给小费给习惯了,你就收着吧!于是你就可以在万众仰慕的目光中走出STARBUCKS,天那么蓝,空气那么清新,这是一次多么完美的装B行为啊! 4月29日 沉默的中国人这是近日发表在华盛顿邮报上的一首诗歌。很真切地表现了从古到今,西方人,西方社会,西方政府是从一个什么样的角度对待中国,中国政府,中国人民。

以前分别写过一些关于competency-based interview的问题和回答方式,本霸王觉得有必要做一下分类总结,争取包括所有可能出现的问题,让各界朋友都能受益。坦白的说,我也是参考一个相关网站的资料,不过我写的应该更好一点吧,呵呵:)
废话不多说了,开始。
所谓的competency-based interview是通过你过去的行为经历来推断你未来的情况的一种面试方式。所以面试官会一直让你举过去的一些所作所为,一些相关的例子,来证明你具备某种他们所寻找的能力。他们根据具体职位的工作性质来确定所需要的skills/competencies,然后再准备相应的面试题目。每个考生所遇到的问题是一样的,面试官会做记录,然后再统一评判。
Competency分很多种:
Individual competencies - your personal attributes: flexibility, decisiveness, tenacity, independence, risk taking, personal integrity
Managerial competencies – taking charge of other people: leadership, empowerment, strategic planning, corporate sensitivity, project management, management control
Analytical competencies – the elements of decision making: innovation, analytical skills, numerical problem solving, practical learning, detail consciousness
Interpersonal competencies - dealing with other people: communication, impact, persuasiveness, personal awareness, teamwork, openness
Motivational competencies – the things that drive you: resilience, energy, motivation, achievement orientation, initiative, quality focus.

如何准备此类面试呢?首先,要仔细阅读job description,推测大概所要考察的能力。然后,自己按照那些考察点来准备一些相关的经历例子,并熟悉掌握。整个面试准备的关键就是你如何很好的组织安排这些例子来突出你所要展示的特点。最常用的一个套路就是STAR:
Situation – describe a situation or problem that you have encountered Task – describe the task that the situation required or your ideas for resolving the problem Action – describe the action you took, obstacles that you have to overcome Results – highlight outcomes achieved
好了,接下来我具体讲一下这些不同的考点,并且举些问题的例子(基本上都是抄来的,大家凑合着看吧,不过霸王也还是有copy&paste组织整理之功的,呵呵)。
Influencing or Persuading Others
You may have strong verbal skills but can you influence another person to change their thinking or take some action - perhaps a colleague follows your advice or a client decides to buy a service or product. At management level have you the skills to persuade and involve rather than coerce and punish? Are you ethical in your dealings with people?
l Tell me about a time when you were able to change someone's viewpoint significantly. l Tell me about a time when you were asked to do something that you disagreed with. l See this pen I'm holding...sell it to me. l Tell me about a person or event that has been influential in your personal development.
Interpersonal and Team Skills
Employers need people who are socially competent. The desire to build and maintain relationships in and beyond the workplace is critical. Many workplaces function on the basis of project teams. These teams are task oriented and short lived. Those who are highly collaborative and co-operative are most likely to thrive in this type of environment.
l What experience have you had working on a team? l What skills and personal qualities have you contributed to the teams you have been part of? l Tell me about a time when you used tact and diplomacy. l Tell me about the last time you had a disagreement with someone. l Tell me about the most difficult person you have worked with. l What have you disliked in your past jobs? l What kinds of people do you enjoy working with? l What kinds of people frustrate you? l What qualities do you admire most in others?
Communication Skills
Daniel Goleman writing on Emotional Intelligence suggests that the key to successful communications is being able to listen to all types of communication in an open way. Are you an active listener, do you really listen and do you hear what is actually said. Are you able to read the non-verbal messages that others communicate? Do you communicate in an engaging and convincing way?
l Tell me about a time when you were successful in getting crucial information from another person. l Tell me about a time when someone misunderstood what you were attempting to communicate to them. l Tell me about a current event you have been following in the press. l What do you think are the three most important things about communication? l Tell me about a time when you worked with people from a culture unlike your own. Personal Adaptability, Energy and Resilience
How quickly and how positively will you adapt to changes in work practices, work roles and work environments and the general flux of the modern workplace? How do you manage or avoid stress?

写太多了,一篇放不下:) 11月20日 艰难的抉择:大公司or小公司?已经有一段时间没有更新了,最近看到博客的浏览量很是惊人,自己经常窃喜,在此特感谢各方朋友的支持。有了你们的捧场,我才能坚定信念继续写下去。
现在很多人都已经拿了一些面试,也经历了恐怖的AC,所以我选择这个时候来分析一下如果拿到几个不同的offer应该如何选择。当然了,我也不是那种欠扁的拿offer在手还去面别的公司的人(也有这种可能,不过也得等拿到再说,呵呵)。一般人是有个offer就马上take了,不会再去找茬。而且很多时候是很难有这种千载难逢的同时拿几个offer的机会的,因为一般公司都是规定在两周之内给答复,时间很紧不容你深思熟虑。所以今天我们就都乐天一点,YY一下吧。当然了,这些闲谈对于那些考虑申请以及计划跳槽的朋友还是会有一定帮助的,起码我希望是这样:)
正如题目所说:大公司还是小公司?先稍微定义一下,大公司是指top-tier investment banks,比如Merrill, Goldman, Morgan Stanley, Citi, Lehman, Credit Suisse等等,就是那些平时非常牛,新闻常见的跨国集团。而小公司,顾名思义,就是小,没那么出名的。似乎很多人都会提出异议,认为这根本没什么好讨论:谁不想去声名远扬的大公司啊,很多是进不了大公司(运气不佳)才选择小公司的。其实这里面还是有很多值得推敲的地方的。我就一步一步的分析吧。
1.名气声望
从这方面来讲,毫无疑问选择大公司。跟周围的人一说在XX银行工作(XX是大公司),马上会得到赞许和认同,毕竟公司出名啊,就算对这个行业了解不多的人,多少还是听说过那个名字的。父老乡亲也从此多了个炫耀的资本,和他们的朋友同事吃饭时你也成了主要话题之一。不过不知道你有没有想过,这一切和自己有什么切实的联系么?还是仅仅是“虚名,就像天上的浮云一样”。
2.员工福利
大公司一定是有好处的,从这点就能很好的体现了。他们有很完善的福利系统,因为有钱,做得就很到位,希望能给员工提供舒适的环境和全方位的服务。比如豪华的健身房,丰盛美味的食物等等(这里不具体举例了,可以参考各个公司的网站)。这些是小公司望尘莫及的。不过谈到工资待遇,有些小公司反倒给的比较多,因为竞争激烈,不多出点钱,怎么得到人才呢。就算不多,至少从这方面还可以跟大公司持平。而且小公司也都在努力的改善福利等方面,对员工也是无微不至的关怀照顾,给人以家的感觉(夸张了点啊)。而大公司有时候因为人太多了,很难面面俱到。和我一起进美林的同事有几个人都是过了半年才有自己的座位,平时都是游击类型的。相比之下,小公司很需要你的加入,一定会给你安排的妥妥当当的。
3.工作职责
这是小公司的优势所在了。所有公司都在反复强调标榜early responsibility,为什么?因为没有人愿意一进去就是个打杂的,什么真正的活都没有,平时帮老板photocopy,端茶倒水;大家都希望自己能够发挥作用,做贡献,体现个人价值。大公司由于人多,多你不多,少你不少,所以一开始就比较难有所作为。而小公司招你进来就希望有立竿见影之效,巴不得你快点开始take responsibility呢。在大公司工作过的人都知道,其实由于部门分得很详细,自己只是负责那一小块的东西,对别的部门完全不了解。在美林,像我一个做BO tech的是连进trading floor的资格都没有。而有的小公司所有人都坐在trading floor上,你就能对周围发生什么,别的部门如何运作清楚的多了。
4.发展机遇
这里主要是谈公司内部的机遇。我觉得大小公司各有利弊吧。大公司是机会很多,无论是部门之间,还是global office角度来说,你一定能够得到满足的。而小公司由于其size的局限性,你可能就没有那么多的机会了。但同时,小公司的政策又是非常宽松的,大公司什么都要按部就班,比如工作不满一年是不能换职位的。而小公司就没那么多说道儿。老田的例子:他跟WestLB的HR说自己想做做rotation。HR问他想做什么,他说trading,IBD等等都想试试。HR就说,好,我给你安排。结果是他第一年一共要做四个rotation,然后再回自己的组。这种羡煞人的美事在大公司想都不要想了。
5.跳槽前景
现在这个年代已经没有所谓的从一而终了(先声明,这里不谈感情,不然不知道多少人要打我骂我了,呵呵),地位高者如美林花旗CEO都双双离职,我们作为初级的小朋友,更是微不足道了。在金融行业,不是你炒它就是你被炒,同事更新换代之快让人目不暇给。所以不要指望着自己进去就一口气做到退休,当然能够有一定的commitment是好事,但我们也讲究未雨绸缪,早做计划是很有必要的。好好想想自己从这份工作里能够得到什么,是不是跟自己远期目标吻合,能不能去达到自己的终极理想。然后知道哪里不足,怎样去调整。举个例子,某些人的最终愿望是做fund manager。可能从operation开始做起,trade assistant,trader,最后fund manager。起步低点没关系,但一定不能迷失方向,一步一个脚印,慢慢去努力。
当你发现自己在本职工作里已经无法再提高的时候,就是你需要考虑change的时候了。这时本公司可能没有那么合适的机遇,所以跳槽就很平常了。而且你如果找本公司的职位,大家都知道你做过什么,你面试时就很难去随意发挥了。所以一般要做大的转换时(从BO跳MO/FO),还是找external opportunity比较好,当然也不排除有些“牛蛙人”(首先比较牛,其次很能跳,像青蛙一样,所以合在一起就是牛蛙人了,原创啊,我太有才了,哈哈)直接在本公司实现飞跃的。
在这个非常时刻,你的背景经历就变得异常重要了。很多employer喜欢有大公司工作背景的人,因为你能够进入大公司,不管曾经做过什么职位,都说明你具备很强的能力,这就是所谓的“名牌效应”,同样适用于毕业院校(不管你学什么专业,只要是名牌大学毕业就行)。这时候大公司的优势就很明显了。但同时呢,由于你是在找experienced hire,他们对你的past experience有非常具体的要求,往往在大公司只做自己一小块职责只了解那一部分的劣势就体现出来了,而小公司所提供的丰富的经验就很可能可以帮助你拿到这个理想的机会,多多少少也许还沾点边么,呵呵。
做一下总结吧。从声望,福利,内部机遇等方面来讲,大公司是有着不可逾越的优势的,再就职时,下一个employer也很看重你曾经在大公司的工作经历。很多大公司的网站都会说“after all, it’s a good name to have on your CV”。一开始我很不理解这句话,现在知道了,这点的确是十分重要的。小公司能够给你提供更多的responsibility,你可以很快的感受到自己的重要,同时学到很多知识,作出很多贡献,因为制度相对宽松,可以了解并尝试其他部门的工作,让自己更具有竞争力,还有就是做得好升职就快。也有很多大公司manager是从小公司跳来的。我写这些的目的就是想告诉大家,万事都是有它的两面性,正所谓“塞翁失马焉知非福”啊。所以真正拿了几个offer的朋友,好好考虑一下再做决定吧,哈哈。。。 11月2日 香港还是伦敦?FO or BO?相信很多朋友在申请时都考虑过以上两个问题,第一是地点,第二是职位,Front Office or Back Office。有时候真的是很难抉择啊,尤其是它们组合起来之后:香港的FO还是伦敦的BO?如果你觉得这个比较好选择,那么香港的BO还是伦敦的FO呢?比较难想了吧。当然真正需要做出这些选择的前提是你得能拿到那些offer。不过在这里我还是想稍微分析一下各自的利弊,希望能对迷茫的朋友有所帮助。
从简单点儿的说起,职位问题。记得以前的文章也曾提到过BO的人都想跳FO。其实也不然。因为FO的工作并不是适合每个人的,工作强度太大,费神费力,而且时间冗长,对于某些懂得享受生活的人来说有些太不人道了,还有就是那些有着美好家庭需要投入的人。这就是各行各业都在强调的一点:work-life balance。每个人追求不同,可能放在眼前的是一份天赐的良缘但需要时间和精力去维护(话又说回来,哪一份感情不需要去精心维护呢?),如果做了FO,可能你赚得是多了,四十岁就可以退休享受人生了,但良缘会等你到四十么?有些东西真的是钱买不来的,腰包鼓了人也变了。不光是自己变,周围人也在变,别人对你的态度看你的眼光也在变。真的要考虑考虑啊。不过本霸王早已经想得很清楚了,活就要活的轰轰烈烈潇潇洒洒,所以我要做FO。
FO主要分两大类(一般投行来说),IBD或是Markets。其中IBD就是我们所熟知的“空中飞人”,世界各地乱窜,见客户揽生意等等。当然这其中也是有不飞的,只是在那边计算策划等等。但统一的特点就是时间超长!夸张者一周睡不超过20个小时,注意:这里说的是一周而不是周一到周五。当然这是极端个别案例,不过要想做IBD就要有牺牲睡眠的觉悟。知道很多女孩子都是“觉主”级别的,所以选择这行之前还是三思啊。懂得养生的朋友都知道睡眠对于人体的正常发展是多么的重要,匮乏者会导致豆蔻年华早逝。先声明我不是性别歧视(可能就有点大男子主义吧,嘿嘿):青春对大多数女生来说还是至关重要的。所以请仔细考虑再做打算吧。另外Markets主要是sales, trading, research等等。时间相对于IBD来说还算稳定,也就是早7到晚7吧,也因具体部门而定。但工作的这段时间一定要全神贯注,不要想着1个小时的lunch break什么的,CQY的描述是trader去厕所都是用飞奔的,而且是边走边拉拉链的,刻不容缓。当然我们也都知道CQY是以“语不夸张死不休”而著称的。只是通过这个小例子,我们知道了大概那里的工作是个什么情形。早起意味着早睡,也就是晚上不能狂欢到太迟,比起IBD更本没有任何night life的情况似乎要好一点点,但考虑到工作强度,你就知道其实是不相伯仲的。
相比之下BO一般就是轻松的代言词了(也有些例外的,比如Goldman的Ops,不多谈了)。所以说如果追求的是一个很好的平衡,BO是个不错的选择。
接下来的问题是明确了目标,自己是否qualify。这个qualify的问题得两说,一是自己是否具备所要求的能力,二是雇主是否能够清晰的看到你具备他们所要求的能力,这也是最最重要的。你知道自己行,你也必须让别人也知道你行啊,不然不就成了自吹自擂。我们又都知道FO竞争非常激烈,相比之下BO就简单多了。所以真正申请时还是最好能够去diversify risk,除非对自己超级有把握的人(比如霸王,呵呵)。大家想想,是酷酷的申请FO然后一个offer甚至连面试都拿不到,还是去低调点申请BO而拿offer拿到手软?当然BO也没有那么容易了,只是相对而言吧。
好了,然后我来谈谈location。出于切身因素考虑只比较伦敦和香港,请见谅。总所周知,香港工作辛苦程度,全球范围来讲是名列前茅的。而欧洲是出了名的relax。不过如果只是因为害怕辛苦,那还不如不选择做投行。我是很倾向于香港的,以下几点原因给大家做参考:
首先,华人做IBD还是首选华人社会。毕竟是以和客户打交道搞关系(不要歪想)为主的行业,华人在西方社会是很难做大的。投行早年就是白人的领地,华尔街金融城都是清一色的金发碧眼白人男,当然少不了外形俊俏。只是后来才渐渐有了华人黑人印度人的加入,但西方社会根深蒂固的一些东西并不是简简单单就能随着时间的流逝而更改的。客户还是喜欢跟自己同种族的人打交道尤其是需要考虑到一大笔投资和回报的问题。而且在香港,情况却是恰恰相反:由于我们伟大祖国的腾飞,越来越多的投行开始打中国富裕小老板的主意,进军中国市场。而香港就是那些投行的大本营。小老板们愿意把钱交给一些金发碧眼连话都听不懂的呆板银行家,还是可以跟他们狂侃K歌喝酒玩乐的我们?这是我们的优势所在啊。
第二,香港是个贫富差距明显的城市。伦敦明显么?至少我们目前感觉不到,普通人挣得就比你少个一两万,人家生活不见得比你差多少,交那么多税,都去资助北爱共和军和黑人小屁孩了。香港税低,而且生活质量差别很显著。投资银行家就是比较有地位受尊重,因为收入高啊。虽说世俗了点,但这也是人之常情。
第三,香港离中国近。这是很重要的一点,想想我们出国在外很多年,都还是计划着以后回去发展的。香港是一个比较理想的跳板,中西合璧,双语环境,美食购物应有尽有(俊男美女也比比皆是),而且离家近,没有时差。想想父母渐渐年迈,离着近点更能尽尽孝心。大家也会担心国内的人情世故复杂,怕自己应付不来,但一直呆在英国就能应付的来了么?没做任何事之前,不要去一味的否定自己,要有信心才能成事,面试这这样,做人更是。
第四,工资。香港的投行基本是global pay的。而内地的就要少很多了。香港是世界金融中心,中国其它城市还没有能算得上的。
综上所述,香港还是一个很好的选择的。当然如果和伦敦有着千丝万缕的联系和牵挂的朋友,还有就是再熬一两年就拿PR的人,就要另做打算了。

基本上就是这样吧,不过很多人都提到GS的面试是会围绕一点展开,所以当准备例子时最好多想几步,详情可参考我之前的文章《面霸归来》。

等等问题吧。基本上也是很standard,只是大家准备时要注意这个motivation的问题,像他们问到为什么你偏偏选香港,看似简单的一个问题,其实包含很深。这里面你既要体现出自己的优势(双语,多国教育背景),也要显示自己对国际市场动态的掌握(以中国为中心的投资理财策略),同时还要表明对香港的了解(世界金融中心,更多的机遇和职责),最后要展现出天长地久的决心(近几年要刻苦努力工作学习,争取做出更多贡献同时走上领导岗位等等)。这里面看的是你的long-term commitment。所以一定要能够很好的说服他们你更本就不想换,这就是你最好的选择了。
最后还是美好的祝福送给大家。去玩了,呵呵。 10月24日 面试是最好的老师有时候真的挺感激这些面试的,尤其是experienced hire,基本上都是雇主有非常specific要求,希望招的新人能够非常胜任,最好有相关经验,或者非常好的理论基础,product knowledge。所以每当去参加此类面试时,就把自己伪装成那样的一个人。由于时间通常很有限,一般也就是一两天的事,这类的伪装又被大家赋予了一个更为形象的称呼方式:“临阵磨枪”。
本霸王是非常热衷于这种行径的,一是比较适合自己的能力特长(超强的短期记忆力,当然记得快忘的也快了),二是的确没有时间也没有必要去做系统的学习。工作过的朋友都知道,学校的教的东西在真正工作中能用到的非常有限,尤其是投行里。所以为了能充分利用我们有限的时间,“临阵磨枪”是必不可少的。这里面就推荐几个非常重要的resources:
Wikipedia – 这个应该没有人不知道吧,从上面很容易找到你想知道的东西。 Investopedia – 更多的是定义,和上面的结合使用,效果奇佳。 Friends – 这是你最最宝贵的信息来源,每当去面某个职位的时候,咨询一下做类似工作的好友,将会受益匪浅。最近鳞茎就给我了很多帮助,基本是每问必达,而且还提供了很多相关资料(公司training material)。再此由衷的感谢。
所以我一直强调的是一个强大的团队,这样你会觉得自己并不是孤军奋战,来自朋友的支持和鼓励,对我们的前进是非常重要的。不过我也看到有些人不是很喜欢交流面试感受,当别人问起时,总是含糊其辞,能避则避。在此鄙视一下他们。如果你不能去毫无保留的帮助别人,又怎么指望别人对你有所帮助呢?的确如果你帮了他,可能会成为竞争关系,但竞争不就是无处不在么。想想我们的根本目的是什么:是找到一份理想的工作。而这份工作的得来并不是通过减少竞争对手,而是自己持之以恒的付出和努力,再加上一些运气。我始终觉得,经常和朋友分享面试经验,互相指点共同进步才是王道。我欢迎认识和不认识的朋友和我交流,也希望这些文章能对大家有所帮助。
好了,言归正传,如果有机会,最好能问朋友要到投行的training material,可能就是个PPT文件,也不大,但真的是很有帮助(这里指的是某个topic,比如credit derivatives)。因为公司培训新手有着多年的宝贵经验,能用最浅显易懂的文字图表来做最详尽的解释(有点像在做广告了,呵呵)。结合上面那两个pedia,基本上就可以搞定面试时所遇到的technical question了。当然,从长远角度来讲,CFA也是一个不错的选择,覆盖知识面比较广,打基础很管用。
经历了一个个面试,会发现自己的专业知识在持续增长。面试时遇到不懂的问题,之后会去思考,下次就知道怎么应对了。通过与朋友的经验分享,明白了很多自己可能会遇到的问题以及应对方式,虽然并没有去参加朋友参加的那个面试,但好像也亲身经历了一番。有朋友会问,你们为什么知道那么多面试的知识?其实这里面没有什么秘诀或是宝典,就是取百家之长,懂得融会贯通,把别人的东西变成自己的,不断的去提高去交流吧。
Robin说的好,“谁有付出,谁就有收获”,我们暂不去考虑他用这句话的真正context,只要知道其实做任何事都是这个道理,你付出的越多你所得的回报就越大。只是可能有时候回报是以不同的形式出现的而已,呵呵。
今天跟老田小谈了一下,得出了一个共同的结论:面试时自己的感觉是很不可靠的。往往你觉得发挥比较糟糕的却可能有比较理想的结果,而那些你认为非常出色的反而不怎么样。当然也有可能我们的境界还不够,不能达到天人合一。稍微分析一下,还是有一定的道理。面试官不仅仅考验你的专业知识和背景,他们也非常看重或是说特别看重的是你这个人的性格特点,具体体现在你面试时所表现出来的态度,你的言行举止。有时候你面试觉得题目非常简单,不自然的可能会流露出骄傲和自豪,自信心空前膨胀,这些也许仅仅是不经意的一瞥或是轻蔑的一笑,但都逃不过考官的法眼。记住,over-confident = arrogant,这也恰是投行拒人的“经典”理由之一。本霸王就曾栽在这里,记忆犹新啊。所以要时刻保持着一颗平常心,不以物喜,不以己悲,先天下之忧而忧,后天下之乐而乐(等到真正拿到offer时再乐,别的时候都不能乐,哈哈)。需要自信,表现在说话铿锵有力,不紧张,每个问题从容回答。同时也要谦虚,虚心请教,不懂就问,切不可表现的比考官强势,做人要留有余地,给对方面子,对方才能给你面子。老田就曾拽拽的跟考官较劲,结果壮烈牺牲。当然这中间的平衡,需要自己去把握了。接下来我们说发挥不好的情况。因为你觉得问题很难,或是很刁钻,让你无从下手,这时候你就会施展浑身解数积极应答。这里也许你答得驴唇不对马嘴(当然不能太夸张),但你的积极进取的态度会给考官留下深刻的印象,enthusiasm是投行招人的一项标准,你对这份工作的热情是很重要的。他们也不希望招一个能力很强但毫无冲劲对工作提不起兴趣的人是吧。所以说呢,面试更多时候是塞翁失马啊。记得打羽毛球一直强调的一点就是如果球没有落地就永远不要放弃去争,这点从 “超级丹”的比赛中就能得到很好的体会。面试也是一样,没有收到最后的拒信就永远不要放弃去拼,就算面试时被问了非常崩溃的问题,也不要放弃,要努力去尝试回答,因为你无法预测最后的结果,而且你自己的感觉经常不准。

个人感觉这个标题还挺酷的,正好反映了我现在的状况。两年前的这个时候,被大家亲切的称呼为“面霸”,后来又变成“小霸王”,以此表现本人面试之多(当然也是被拒次数之多。除非是有非常癖好之人,估计没人会以面试为乐,就连变者如CQY也是会感到屡次面试之痛苦的)。总之呢,那段时间是不堪回首的。一下子两年过去了,又一个轮回,又开始疯狂填表申请,准备面试。收到据信时新认识的朋友安慰我说不要悲伤不要灰心,再接再厉。我笑了,朋友还不够了解我,这种经历对我来说实在是太司空见惯了,再平常不过了。别说悲伤了,就连眉头都不会皱一下(其实心里还是会骂HR傻X,不懂得欣赏人才等等)。然后就想起了曾经的身经百战,一时之间百感交集,遂决定用此文来记念一下。
一周之内参加4个面试,频率的确有点高,虽然不是很吃得消,不过还是硬挺过来了,为了“面霸”这个称号也要搏一搏。结果先不管,精神是可嘉的。觉得自己又升级了,以前接面试都是考虑给自己留几天时间准备,现在是选最近的时间,越快越好。不逼不知道自己有多大潜能,就好象说“不去海南不知道自己身体不好”一样(有点远了)。我自己身体还是挺好的,所以就要给自己高压,这样才能有所突破,有所作为。不搏不精彩!
说点个人感受吧。HR面试比较郁闷,其实他们都不懂什么,拿个表照着读,一个一个问题问你,然后在那边记录。估计最后做决定也轮不到他们。但不管怎么样,作为考生,还是要重视他们,要摸准他们的品位(其实是毫无品味可言的)。很多common问题,为什么选这个公司,为什么选这个部门,你为什么适合等等。我想了想,其实大家的答案应该是相差不多的,认真点准备的朋友,都会去看公司的网站,研究所需的条件,仔细思考自己的优势劣势。我看能拿到面试的朋友应该都起码有些觉悟,知道该怎么去回答这些常见问题。这里我们排除运气极佳的朋友,胡乱填填什么都不懂也能拿面试的那些人。不过我相信这样的幸运儿是极少数(其实本人在三年前尝试报实习时就这么幸运过一把,拿到DB trading的面试,不过当时连trading是什么都不知道,所以结果可想而知。举此例只为证明这样的案例还是有的,呵呵)。我们先暂时排除他们,因为老天通常是不公平的,没必要抱怨或羡慕。谋事在人,成事在天么。所以这部分回答只要不是太出格,太弱,应该还是可以起码混到个average吧。话又说回来,如果这类问题都不好好准备,答的语无伦次,那也不用渴望能有什么作为了。HR也是很清楚你会背答案,或是打电话时照着资料读,其实大家心照不宣了。总而言之呢,这些问题回答的合理,该做的准备工作做到,结合自身特点来组织答案,我想HR们不会在这些上面大做文章的,换句话说,不会因为这个而刷掉你。当然如果因为这些问题答不好而被刷掉,那就好好自我反省吧。
接下来就是大家所熟知的所谓的competency based interview。也是我个人认为真正用来决定命运的。当然这中间还有个很重要的motivation的问题我刚才忘了说,我们等一下再谈。都有什么competency?其实无外乎teamwork,leadership,people skill (negotiation/influence),time management,problem solving,ability to work under pressure等等。这些我们所有人都知道,了解,也会去好好准备examples,可为什么到头来差错偏偏出在自己精心准备的例子上面了呢?有些朋友怪罪HR,说他们问题太刁,没有事先准备,而且经常刨根究底,让人防不胜防。当然了,本霸王也曾经如此想过,也曾为此郁闷过。可郁闷过后就会发现,其实还是自己的问题,不关无辜的HR的事。首先,我们知道准备每个例子时,要注意覆盖到“how, why,(两个连起来读好像“号外”,呵呵) when, where, with whom”,之后是自己做了什么,结果如何,学到了什么。这样好像已经很完美了,该cover的都cover到了,可为什么每次被问时总是觉得好像还是没法答得很巧妙,或者说总是觉得自己没有准备到呢?哈哈,问题就出在一个很简单的点,what would you do differently?是不是大家总是被问到这个,而且总是在支支吾吾,想半天才能挤出几个词,而且还紧张的要死。反正我以前总是这样:)这里就存在一个换位思考的问题,也是有悖我们正常分析解决问题的习惯。大家都觉得自己急中生智出来的答案已经是很完美了,那还要怎么做才能更好呢?恰恰就是这个思想总在束缚我们,也使得我们没办法很好的很有把握的完整回答这个问题。所以我在这里的建议就是:每次准备完一个例子,都再问问自己还能怎么做,不要认准一个死理儿钻,从宏观一点的角度去想问题,一定还有不同的解决方案,而且更好。那我相信,如果每个例子都如此准备的话,过这关应该就不是太大的问题了。
最后我来谈谈motivation。其实之前那些common问题算是考察motivation的一部分,看你对这个银行有多了解,对你要做的事情知道多少等等。我这里要说的motivation就更specific一点。比如我经常被问到为什么从电子工程转到银行,好像根本就不搭边么。当然跟朋友解释时可以轻松的说“银行注重的是能力,而自己就偏偏具备了这些能力,再加上超级迅猛的学习能力,就可以在那里工作了”。这是平时瞎扯,真正面试时,还是要用一些比较有说服力的东西来证明自己的motivation的。我比较常用的就是说自己虽然身在曹营(EEE),但还是心在汉(I-Bank),具体就是主动选择了一些商业学科加强自己的经济知识,参加了很多投行的招聘会,在那边跟很多人聊天了解到投行是如何运作及各个部门的区别等等,读FT跟踪最新经济动脉,同时分析自身优缺点,发现自己很适合在一个dynamic, fast-changing environment工作,而且喜欢不断挑战自己,发挥自己数学分析等方面的特长,所以说投行是一个非常好的职业选择。我觉得回答此类问题,一定要结合自己经历,同时还要尽可能的表现自己具备在投行工作的一切条件。其实很多问题都是这样的,他们不会去专门问你为什么合适,但你一定要反复强调才能得到认同,切记切记。不要实实在在的问什么答什么,当然也不能扯得太远,让人反感。这其中的奥妙就要自己通过实践体会了,哈哈哈(我说这话好像挺不负责的啊)。无论如何,希望这些能对有需要的朋友有所帮助吧。

Section 1:
1. Why did you choose to study that particular degree? 2. Why did you choose this university? 3. Why do you want to work in RBS?

1. Give me an example of you working in a team, but the team was not working together effectively? 2. What do you think are the main reasons for the team not working together effectively at first, and how did you resolve it?

1. Give me an example of a time when you were responsible for working on sth important. 2. What do you think are the main challenges? 3. How did you deal with these challenges? 4. What would you do differently?
Section 4
1. What are the steps you have taken to reach a career in Financial Service Industry? 2. How do you keep yourself updated with the financial market? 3. Why are you suitable for the position you choose? 4. Have you applied to any other banks? What is the progress? 5. What aspects would you consider when choosing a role? 6. Do you have any questions to ask? 7. Do you have anything more to be included in your application?
基本上就是这么多,不过我可能有记不清楚的地方,或是问的方式稍有出入,见谅吧。这里我要强调的几点就是,如果被问到还申请了别的什么银行,最好说一些比较relevant的,他们的main competitor,我觉得比较好的回答方式可能是说那些也差不多到面试阶段了(我的回答是已经做过了网上测试,再等消息,不过本人对自己的网上测试很有信心),首先让他们觉得你是很抢手的。然后你一定要说,当然自己的最佳选择还是你们银行,因为XXX(举个例子,我回答RBS就提到了他们近期跟中国银行的合作关系,以及成功摆平Barclays拿到ABN部分业务,这说明他们在全球范围尤其是亚洲会产生翻天覆地的变化,发展将极为迅猛,自己就愿意同公司一起成长,为公司发展尽一份薄力(听起来很肉麻啊,不过HR就愿意听这类的话),所以会选择RBS)。这样回答应该算是滴水不漏了,既表现了自己的能力广为认同(他们main competitor也想要我),又展示了对市场发展的了解,同时还突出自己的忠诚之心,我要是考官,不要这样的考生还要谁啊。当然这有些自我陶醉了,如何去回答,还是大家自己体会吧。当问到有没有什么遗漏想补充的,最好提一些刚才没有机会说但又很能体现自己与众不同的东西。比如我说自己在三个国家学习和生活过,有超强的适应能力,很擅长跟不同种族的人打交道,所以非常适合在一个强调diversity的国际化大公司工作,which is RBS。
以上就是自己一点点小心得,说得再多扯得再远,还是得看看能否通过才行,不然都是空谈了,哈哈。对了,面试最最重要的一点,就是心态。一定放平稳,放轻松。“此处不留爷,自有留爷处”,犯不着好像求他们一样,记住你和面试官是平等的,他面试你的同时你也在面试他。说起来容易做起来难啊,还是自己体会吧。:)
